The Neuromuscular Connection

The SportsLab training method is the revolutionary product of four decades of diligent research and the continued pursuit of athletic excellence by renowned sports enhancement specialist and former NFL conditioning coach Marv Marinovich. The system is a scientifically-based program which defines what constitutes excellence in athletic performance, remediates the athlete's deficiencies and imbalances, and challenges the body to excel through a stimulating multi-modality approach. All the exercises have been personally devised and refined by Marv during his intense study of sports science in the United States and abroad as well as a consultant to professional and collegiate sports teams. Individual pieces of equipment have been designed and modified to precisely effect the desired area.

The goal of this cutting-edge training is to raise the athlete's Physical IQ, or Performance Quotient, by developing sports relevant strength and technical mastery through precision of movement, the intensification of key joint actions, and the refinement of the body's kinesthetic sensory system. SportsLab training draws from a vast arsenal of proven methods to accurately challenge the athlete with unique exercises specifically chosen to enhance the essential elements for success in the athlete's sport. The distinguishing characteristic of this training is to optimally challenge the body with the systematic and sequential progressive introduction of protocols with greater training effect or stimulus in order to overcome the neurological system's tendency to stagnate in its responses.

The resulting superior nervous system functioning is the critical component which produces dramatic improvement in sports speed, power, quickness, grace, sports specific skill and overall athleticism.

Initial Analysis

In order to focus the training to the specific components which will make a dramatic impact on performance, SportsLab athletes are videotaped and evaluated in the following areas to detect deficits:

Skeletomuscular System

  • Symmetry and proportion
  • Muscle equilibrium
  • Balance, posture, and alignment
  • Body Composition
  • Strength of Key Muscle Groups

Program Development

The SportsLab training method is an individualized, dynamic, designer approach to athletic excellence. The techniques employed are logical, novel, and systematically advanced to continue the process of stimulating the body's neuromuscular systems. For best possible results in sports, it is essential that movements are precisely modeled at or exceeding the speed of competition: joint actions, posture, resistance, energy system, coordination structure, intensity, mental effort, and range of motion. A specific prescription is developed using key muscle groups which focus on the prominent elements necessary for sports enhancement.

Training priorities are established according to their relevance in each athlete's specific sport. The athlete begins with 2-3 workouts per week lasting approximately 1-1/2 hours each. As the athlete progresses and his initial goals are met and exceeded, the number and the duration of the workouts can be modified commensurate with this progress and advancement.

Results of SportsLab training are measurable and impressive. An athlete who trains a minimum of 3 times a week, 2 hours/workout for 6 weeks and follows the regimen and principles recommended by SportsLab can expect the following improvement:

6" increase in Vertical Jump • 8-12 mph increase in Throwing Velocity of Fast Ball • .3-.5 decrease in 40 yd time • 10% increase in Lean Muscle Mass • 15% Decrease in overall Body Fat
